Section 11 - Cork

Goleen - Bantry

Description

On this part of the Eurovelo Route we travel by way of two of Ireland’s renowned Southwest Peninsulas – the Mizen and Sheeps’ Head.

Firstly, from Goleen we head towards Barley Cove passing Crookhaven Harbour. Perhaps at Barley Cove we should take a small detour from the Route to visit iconic Mizen Head Signal Station (Ireland’s most South-Westerly land point). Here we can view Mizen Head’s Single Suspension Arched Bridge, The Fastnet Rock, rugged sea cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean in all its grandeur.

Back on route, we ride towards Dunmanus Bay and along it’s shore to the village of Durrus. From here we head to Kilcrohane along the North shore of Dunmanus Bay. Again, in Kilcrohane we might have time for a coffee and cake at the Old Creamery or Eileen’s.

After our coffee break, we now ascend to the top of the Goat’s Path with panoramic views of Bantry Bay, Dunmanus Bay and beyond. From the Goats’ Path it’s a 25km. ride along Bantry’s renowned Bay to the town. In Bantry there are ample opportunities of outside dining, whilst watching the sun set over the Bay and the rugged Caha Mountains beyond.
